Today, we are chatting with Alyssa Wasko – the young owner, designer and ingenue behind these stylish, comfortable and inspirational scarves.
You have such an touching story. Tell us about the inspiration behind Donni Charm and how you started your company.
Donni Charm started as one of my many creative fashion projects, and turned into a coping mechanism after losing my father. It was a great way to stay active in something that interests me, and channel my energy into something positive. My father’s name was Donald, and those close to him called him Donny—our scarves are adorned with positive good luck charms and that’s how donni charm was born.
What is it like to own your own company at the age of 22? What has surprised you the most about starting your own scarf line and owning your own business?
People are generally surprised that a girl at the age of 22 started this line, but one of my main goals is just showing other young girls that the possibilities are endless. If you’re inspired by something, it doesn’t matter how old you are, you can achieve anything!
In just the past year, Donni Charm scarves have skyrocketed in popularity – now, you count A-list celebrities like Jessica Alba and Hilary Duff as fans! What was it like the first time you saw a celebrity wear your scarves? Who else has worn your designs?
It was surreal. A friend called me before she took off on a flight and told me Jessica Biel was wearing one of our original scarves. I didn’t believe her so I ran to the store to check for myself. I was screaming and everyone was staring. Great experience. Jessica Biel, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Halle Berry, Whitney Port, Jennifer Garner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Vanessa Hudgens and more!! It’s so exciting.
Tell us about your scarves. Do you design them all yourself?
I do all the designing myself with influence from the Donni Charm team. I try to offer something for everyone. We have girls in middle school wearing Donni Charm, my grandma and her friends and everything in between. We have edgy funky styles as well as classic so everyone can enjoy.
What kinds of fabrics, fashions and style trendsetters inspire you? What is your design process?
Soft fabrics are my biggest priority. I want our scarves to be something you can wear out and look great, in addition to snuggling up with them at home. I am inspired by anything versatile that offers comfort, practicality, and chic style.
As far as my design process, I don’t have any technical design background so I really just have a vision in my head that I get down on paper and then relay it to our graphic designer.
Do you have a favorite Donni Charm scarf?
I can’t pick a favorite! That would be like picking a favorite child. Haha. I love them all. BUT— I am very excited about our bright color blocked scarves coming out this spring in addition to our amazing Grateful Dead collection!
You also design t-shirts, tank tops and hoodies. Do you plan on continuing to expanding your fashion line to include more clothing?
I like dabbling in other product categories, but before we expand fully in other areas I want to make sure people know donni charm for our scarves, which is how we started and what we are really known for.
What is next for Donni Charm scarves?
As we are just beginning to promote our Spring 2012 line and our licensed collection for the Grateful Dead, we are looking forward to an exciting year! And with all the positive feedback we are getting about our fall collection, it should prove to be a fantastic 2012!
